Stick It To The (Microsoft) Man!

So you got your new computer and wrote a new resume, you are ready to find that new job, start your college career, or make a presentation that will get you a big raise.

But when you go to use the documents you created, you find the Office software you have was a trial version and it has expired. Now you can't use the document at all!

Worse, you find out that it costs hundreds of dollars to buy a usable version. What can you do? Oh, the man snuck right up and got you didn't he!

But wait! Check out OpenOffice.org, a group of people that believe software should be free have provided a completely Microsoft Office compatible suite that you can download for free.

OpenOffice has been around for years, and is constantly being updated, just like it's expensive big brother.

Check it out at: OpenOffice.org

Sometimes you are prety sure your computer is malfunctioning, only to find it's your internet connection.

WinPatrol is a great little utility that gives you advanced control over startup programs and warns you if a program is installed with out your knowledge.

The warning is critical, if youhaven't installed anything and a warning pops up, you can stop that program (spyware?) from running.

One of my favorite features is the "delayed start" option that is new in the 2007 edition. This allows you to have a program delay it's startup until Windows is full booted. So many Antivirus programs, printer utilities and other programs all start up when you turn the computer on, and many forcably update themselves at every start up.

If you have noticed that your computer just can't manage to do anything for a few minutes after starting, just delay those programs until after the computer gets fully booted and performance is greatly improved.
